BuilderBase vs Housecall Pro

Looking for a Housecall Pro alternative?

BuilderBase is simpler, includes more users for the money, and puts everything on the estimate and invoice side (good/better/best options, deposits, e-signature, online payments) on the $39/mo plan. Here's an honest look at both, including where Housecall Pro wins.

Honest answer

Where Housecall Pro is the better pick.

  • You want someone on the phone. Housecall Pro offers live phone and chat support on every plan. We answer email (fast, and it's the founder), but there's no phone line.
  • You dispatch a fleet. GPS tracking and route optimization help when techs run lots of calls a day. We have neither.
  • Reviews and marketing are a big part of your growth. Review management comes on every Housecall Pro plan, with email campaigns as an add-on. We send a single Google review request when a job is completed, and that's it.
  • Financing, an open API and a Spanish app. Housecall Pro has consumer financing through Wisetack, an open API, a Spanish-language app and a big add-on ecosystem. Financing is on our roadmap. The rest isn't in BuilderBase.

The other side

Why service pros switch to BuilderBase.

  • More of your crew, for less.

Pro includes 10 users at $99/mo, and extra users are $15/mo on any plan. Growing from 5 people to 6 shouldn't push you into a bigger plan.

  • QuickBooks without the jump.

QuickBooks Online sync comes with Pro at $99/mo, along with scheduling, recurring jobs, the client portal and reports.

  • Built for jobs that last more than a day.

Plan bigger work on a Gantt chart with dependencies, send change orders the client signs, track selections, and get reminded before a vendor's insurance certificate expires.

  • Roles you name yourself.

Build custom roles and flip one switch to keep pricing off a crew member's screen. Your subs see the schedule, not your margins.

FAQ

Questions about leaving Housecall Pro.

How much cheaper is BuilderBase than Housecall Pro?

Month to month, our Starter plan is $39/mo with 2 users and Housecall Pro's Basic plan is $79/mo with 1 user. For a small crew, our Pro plan is $99/mo with 10 users. Housecall Pro shows prices for its bigger plans after a plan quiz or a demo, so compare against the number they give you.

Can I bring my data over from Housecall Pro?

Yes. Export CSVs from Housecall Pro and our import wizard brings in your customers, price book, jobs, invoices and estimates. You see a preview before anything is saved, and you can undo the whole import if something looks off. You can do all of it during the free trial, before you pay us anything.

What would I give up by leaving Housecall Pro?

Live phone support, GPS tracking, route optimization, consumer financing, built-in review management, email marketing campaigns, an open API, a Spanish-language app, and Housecall Pro's wider set of add-ons. If phone support or dispatching a fleet is how you run your day, Housecall Pro is probably the better fit.

Does BuilderBase have route optimization?

No. We don't do route optimization or GPS tracking. Housecall Pro offers route optimization. If your techs run lots of short calls a day, that matters. If you run fewer, longer jobs, you probably won't miss it.

Is there a contract?

No. BuilderBase is month to month and you can cancel any time. If you want to pay yearly it drops to $32.50/mo for Starter or $82.50/mo for Pro, but you never have to commit to a year.

What is support like?

Honestly, this is one place Housecall Pro has us beat: they offer live phone and chat support on every plan, and we don't have a phone line. What we do have is a founder who reads every support email and usually answers the same day. Email chris@builderbase.co any time, including before you sign up.
