Summary
BuilderBase lets contracting businesses text their own customers about their projects, from a phone number registered to that business. This page describes that program: who sends the messages, how consent is obtained, what is sent, and how to stop it.
BuilderBase does not currently send text messages to its own users. If that changes, we'll add it here and ask for separate consent.
Consent to receive text messages is not a condition of purchase or of receiving any service. A contractor may not require a customer to accept texts in order to receive a quote or have work performed, and declining texts does not restrict the customer in any way.
Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe, or HELP for help.
1. Who Sends and Receives Messages
Who sends them
The individual contracting business, not BuilderBase. Each business registers its own phone number with the mobile carriers and sends under its own business name. BuilderBase provides the software and, at the business's request, acts as its agent in completing that carrier registration.
Who receives them
The contractor's own customers who have given that contractor prior express consent. Contractors do not use this service to text their subcontractors, suppliers or anyone else.
2. How Consent Is Obtained
Contractors may only message a person who has given prior express consent, obtained in one of these ways:
- Web opt-in. The customer selects a checkbox on their project portal or on the estimate page they have been sent. The checkbox is unchecked by default and separate from any other agreement. Approving an estimate never requires accepting text messages.
- Keyword opt-in. The customer texts a keyword such as JOIN to the contractor's number, which is itself the affirmative act of consent.
- Directly to the contractor. A customer tells the contractor they may text them, typically at a site visit or when requesting a quote. The contractor records this in BuilderBase, which stores the method and date. BuilderBase blocks sending to any number with no consent recorded against it: entering a phone number does not enable messaging.
The consent language shown at web opt-in reads:
Text me updates about my project from [Business Name]. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe or HELP for help. See our SMS Terms and Privacy Policy.
This program carries service messages only. Contractors cannot send marketing or promotional messages through BuilderBase, and consent a contractor records on a customer's behalf authorises service messages only.
What the opt-in looks like
The screenshots below show each place consent is collected. The web opt-ins appear only to a customer who has a phone number on file, and only when the contractor's business is registered with the carriers.
3. Messages
Message types
- Estimates, invoices, contracts, and change orders ready for review
- Appointment and site-visit reminders
- Project progress updates and job status
- Payment reminders and receipts
- Replies to questions the customer has asked
Sample messages
- Whitfield Builders: Your estimate EST-204 is ready to review: https://app.builderbase.co/client/estimate/xxxx Reply STOP to opt out.
- Reminder from Whitfield Builders: Kitchen remodel site visit is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6 at 9:00 AM.
- Whitfield Builders: Invoice INV-1043 for $1,850.00 is ready: https://app.builderbase.co/client/invoice/xxxx
The first message a contractor sends to a customer identifies the business and says how to opt out.
Frequency
Varies with project activity. Typically a few messages per month per active project. Automatic reminders are sent only between 8am and 9pm local time.
4. Opting Out and Getting Help
Reply STOP to any message to unsubscribe. We record the opt-out against the phone number itself, so it applies to every record sharing that number and no further messages are sent to it. Reply HELP at any time to receive information about the program and how to unsubscribe. A customer can also ask the contractor directly to stop texting them.
Opt-out records are retained indefinitely, because deleting one would risk resuming messages to someone who asked us to stop.
5. Privacy
No mobile information, including phone numbers and SMS consent records, is sold, rented, or shared with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. Phone numbers and message content are shared only with the subprocessors strictly necessary to deliver a message the recipient has consented to receive (currently Twilio and the mobile carriers) and with no one else. Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent are not shared with any third party for marketing purposes.
See our full Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
6. Carrier Notice
Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
